Cleaning responsibilities

Keeping our spaces clean is a joint responsibility between you and us. We will clean communal areas outside your flat. This includes hallways, stairs, lifts and entrances.

Here are your responsibilities inside your flat:

Cleaning your bedroom

You are fully responsible for ensuring your room is clean and tidy:

You will have access to basic equipment including a vacuum cleaner and mop
You are responsible for keeping the bathroom clean If you have an en suite room
You must take all your rubbish out to the external bins regularly.

Keeping the kitchen and communal areas clean

Everyone in the block, house or flat is jointly responsible for cleaning communal areas such as kitchens, corridors and bathrooms.

Responsibilities include:

keeping all surfaces, including the dining table and worktops, clean and clear
washing up dirty kitchen items daily
ensuring all personal items are stored in your kitchen cupboards or room
keeping your fridges clean and disposing of out of date items
mopping, sweeping or vacuuming dirty floors
using the waste bins responsibly and recycling according to the poster in kitchen
taking all full rubbish bags out to the external bins outside your halls
keeping corridors clean and clear of personal belongings.

Cleaning rotas

The best way to care for your living space is by working together:

create and agree a weekly rota with your flatmates
do a joint weekly shop to make sure you have everything you need and don't duplicate.

Outside areas

Please ensure that the areas close to your residences stay clear of any rubbish including cigarette ends. Use the external bin stores, litter and cigarette bins provided.

Our cleaning responsibilities

To help you out, our housekeeping team visit your shared kitchens and communal bathrooms once a week to:

deep-clean the oven, microwave, toaster and kettle
disinfect surfaces and sinks
vacuum and mop floors
decrease cooker hoods
clean landings and stairwells
clean common areas and entrance ways
clean shared bathrooms facilities.

Waste and recycling

As a university, we strive for sustainability and rely on your help.

Please use the three separately labelled kitchen bins to recycle. The kitchen poster will help you work out what goes where and if you’re unsure you can always ask an ambassador.
